Working in PJs

Through my decision to be bicoastal, I had to find jobs that allowed me to work from wherever. Sometimes, I'll go to the coffee shop, or I'll go to the club house, or sometimes even the library. BUT where you'll most likely find me doing work is at home, in my pajamas, with a smile on my face.

Having both the experience of working at home and in an office allows me to see the pros and cons of each side. Overall, working from home has given me such comfort that I think I like it more than working in an office. I thought I was crazy and the only one because I thought of legitimate reasons why people wouldn't like it. Some might feel lonely or distracted by chores they need to do around their house. Some might even look at working from home as lazy or unprofessional. However, I did a little research and it's actually proven that working from home can be more effective (and cost efficient) than working in an office! The article "Advantages of Agile Work Strategies For Companies" really captured my attention and I suggest you read it. (They do mention working from home is not for everyone.)

With this being said, I came up with a poem. It's pretty long but that in itself captures how crazy our work life is! The first person I describe, is what we have become accustom to in regards to our working life as well as trying to balance personal life. The second person, where I use the pronoun "I," is a life we all might dream of. Maybe someday will become the new norm. Oh and, of course no piece is good without a little exaggeration.

Against Time

While you're hoping in the shower, ironing your clothes, blow drying your hair, putting on makeup, grabbing the last yogurt in the fridge leaving none for your significant other, and shoving snacks into your bag and calling that "lunch,"

I'm waking up listening to Jack Johnson, cooking a colorful breakfast in my pajamas, and dancing while emptying the dishwasher.

I'm sipping on my cup of tea, logging on to my computer, and messaging my boss "Good Morning!"

While you're trying to respond to emails at a red light, sitting in traffic that never seems to end, shoving yogurt in your mouth on the drive in, driving around the parking garage (that you have to pay for) trying to find a spot, spilling coffee on your new blouse, and rushing to your 8:30AM meeting,

I'm just getting out of my video chat meeting, making a to do list for the day, and putting on Mellow Beats on Spotify.

I'm tackling the first task on my list, then the second, and then the third.

While you're at you desk with your coffee stained shirt, starring at your 232 unread emails, listening to some coworker chat loudly about topics that are TMI in the nearby break room, going for your second cup of coffee as you are so exhausted from getting to bed late, and munching on your "lunch" while working on an overdue assignment,

I'm down to 32 unread emails.

I'm taking my lunch break which includes: throwing in a load of laundry, going on a walk with my neighbor, and making a tasty, vegetable filled salad.

While your beeping your horn at the person that just cut you off, constantly looking at the clock because you're supposed to be at dinner at 6:30, thinking about how you it takes you 45 minutes for what should be a 15 minute drive, remembering the person your meeting with got you the shirt you spilt coffee on, and trying to find a sweater in your back seat to cover it up,

I'm just turned on dinner, finishing my last few emails, and making a to-do list for tomorrow.

I'm waiting for friends to come over so we can eat a delicious meal followed by a walk through the neighborhood.

While you're wrapping up with dinner, rushing home to finally change out of your shirt, calling your mom who you've been meaning to call the past week, trying to resolve an important issue from earlier today, and trying to catch up on your emails that you didn't have time to look into,

I'm watching a movie with my friends.

I'm going to bed.

While you're texting your friend trying to schedule time to hang out and at the same time, putting the dishes in the dishwasher, throwing a load of clothes in, brushing your teeth, washing your face, picking out an outfit for tomorrow, and finally getting into bed at 11:57PM,

I'm sleeping.

I've been sleeping.
